The M family just got back from their first vacation to Disney World. Anyone who knows me well, knows Disney is one of my favorite topics of conversation, so we got along great. They even brought Pooh Bear and pals along for entertainment. Despite the cold and wind, we had a great time!

Just FYI-next time you get family photos taken, remember one thing: Wear bright colors. Look how happy the colors are in these photos. I love it. Great job, Mom (because you know Dad is never responsible for this sort of thing).

I love taking family pictures. Love it. But I have to admit that my favorite images are always from the moments that I steal mom and dad for photos. Couples that dedicate their lives (and sanity!) to raising kids, endless messes, and tantrums. None of them ever gets enough time to spend together alone (even in the photos there is usually a kid hanging on a leg, just outside of the frame). It's different than taking engagements because this is an older, more comfortable love. It makes me so very happy.

The B Family were troopers. We had arranged to meet at an awesome location in downtown Houston but when we arrived downtown, all of the roads leading to the location were closed down for a marathon. With a little quick thinking (and some sweet talking) on the part of Mr. B, we were able to go over to a park that normally requires a pretty pricey permit and take photos there instead.

It worked beautifully. The light was fantastic, the marshmallows (a.k.a. bribes) were yummy, and mom looked gorgeous. Seriously, if I looked this good pregnant, I might think about doing it more.

It's that wonderful time of year when families from all over gather together. Members of the P family live in Louisiana, Las Vegas, Utah, and here in Houston. They only had two days together, but spent a little bit of their time with me. It was cold (poor little Ava was shaking), but with a little help from gummy candies (smart parents bribe their kids for pictures) and a lot of funny faces from Grandpa, we kept everyone entertained long enough to get some good photos.

I can remember being assigned to work on a group writing project in the 5th grade with my friend Cathy. For some reason, this is a very vivid memory for me. We were told to rewrite a fairy tale. Honestly, I can say (and I can't say this about very many group projects because I tend to be a control freak), Cathy did most of the work. She was, even in the 5th grade, an AMAZING writer. Seriously. She wrote prose (and still does) like you wouldn't believe. If anyone needs to write a book, it's this girl.

Not only that, but she is one of the most joyous people I have ever met. Her happiness is contagious. I assume she has bad days, but she is the epitome of a lemonade maker. It was such a privilege to take photos of Cathy and her husband, Marc. We had a lot of fun and had a chance to catch up on life. I really hope it's not another 10 years before they step in front of the camera again!! Thank you F Family for a laughter filled morning!!

A few months ago, I had the chance to take the "before" shots (in the form of maternity photos) and yesterday, I got to meet the adorable "after". Two month old Molly Mae (cutest name ever!) was so sweet. She didn't want to sleep, but was such a happy baby that it didn't really matter. I loved capturing the interaction between Molly and her parents. Perfect moments.

Amanda's gorgeous family agreed to meet me at the parking lot carnival for their photo shoot. I've known Amanda since high school. She is my wonderful friend who makes sure I get out of the house for a social activity at least once a month. I usually just get so caught up in my "to-do" list that I forget to have time for me! She is so great to do that.

This time the carnival was a little more crowded than it has been in the past, but we had a great time despite all the people (and the dark luminous clouds). I LOVE the carnival colors as a photo backdrop. It's by far my favorite location. Too bad it isn't available for every session.

Today I experienced quite a few firsts. The first time I had to compete with 300 Cub Scouts for the best photo spots. The first time I yelled "Bananapants!!" to make an adult smile. And the first time I took photos in cool weather! Woo hoo!

Mike and Jessica recently got married, but wanted something un-weddingy (not a word. go with it) for their Christmas cards. Their family is rounded out with two adorable dogs that also participated in the shoot. They were a big hit with the Scouts who kept stopping to pet them. The dogs are so cute. Who could resist?!?

This mom takes having three (adorable) 15 month girls completely in stride. I do not know how she does it. I definitely got a workout during this session! I loved watching Mom and Dad interact with the girls. Even in the short time of our session, I was able to see that each one has a different little personality and a distinct place in the family dynamic. What fun.

I think Dad is going to have to invest in a few shotguns when these girls get older!!

I adore finding completely random, but awesome places to take photos. I spotted this field while out running errands-it sits in between two shopping areas, but is absolutely perfect. If only the weather would have been perfect too. Thank goodness the S Family was up for anything. We would quickly scramble to get photos in during the few seconds that the sun would come out from behind the dark rain clouds. Finally, the rain started coming down too hard and we had to leave, but I'm so in love with the shots we did manage to get in the sporadic sunlight.

Especially this one. My favorite. Hands down. I am always so happy when I get a really fantastic photo of mom and dad. Mainly because many times their last picture alone together was from their wedding day.

Back in high school Sabrina and I wrote notes back and forth, sang in choir together, watched OJ Simpson's infamous police chase, and then graduated and never saw each other again. Somehow, about 4 years ago, we reconnected through our blogs and I think we've chatted online or emailed almost every day since. Isn't it crazy that a close friend can be someone you haven't actually seen in 13 years?!? The internet is such an amazing thing.

After sharing ups and downs of running a business, challenges of unemployment and illnesses, advice, dealing with kids, and praying for each other for four years online, we were finally able to reunite IN PERSON today. And we didn't skip a beat.

I love Sabrina and am so grateful for her friendship. Her family was adorable (you can certainly tell they are used to being in front of the camera-that's what happens when mom is a photographer). I am so glad we were able to visit and take pictures!!

One of the great things about moving back to Houston is that I get to reconnect with people I haven't seen since high school. A.long.time.ago.

Laura and I graduated together. Her baby, Molly (love that name!), is due at the end of October. If I was as adorable as Laura is pregnant, I might actually consider doing it again.

She and her husband, Brandon, brought along their first baby, Truman the dog. I've never owned a dog before (well, besides that three month stint a couple of years ago. we don't speak of that time.) and so was amazed to discover that dogs and children really are a lot alike. They don't like to look at the camera, run away during the shoot, and tire of picture taking quickly. Only you can't bribe them with candy. Laura and Brandon said that he sometimes even keeps them up at night. Sounds like they have already been trained for a baby! Good job Truman!

I believe in family photos. As in: I believe in God, I believe in the Bible, I believe in my marriage, I believe in family photos.

Every year since my son was born, I have made it a goal to have our family photos taken. Whether I feel good about my body (never), or think the kids will pose well for the camera (never), or I have the money to buy new, matchy, designer clothes (never). I do it because I believe in family photos.

The camera is the only way to freeze frame my family's dynamic at.that.moment. Silly. Crazy. Tickle Fests. Tantrums (oh yes, photographers have captured these for me. priceless.). I have tried numerous time to do what a photographer does with the timer on my camera, but it never works out. I have to rush back into the scene and the result is never natural. Thank goodness I can rely on amazing photographers to capture what I can't.

I realize that sometimes (um...always!) money is tight, which is why I've also been grateful for photographers that offer reasonable prices or are willing to trade for services. One year we had a friend that was starting her business take our photos for her portfolio (free!). One year I traded a custom made quilt in exchange for photos. It's not how much you pay for the photos that is important, it's that you make it a priority.

Whether I take your photos, or a friend, or your mom, or even another photographer-make time for it this year. Find a local photographer that's affordable and loves to capture candid, real, moments. It's important. It belongs at the top of your "to-do" list.

By the way, this is one of the main reasons that I keep my prices very reasonable. I want family photos to be affordable for everyone. When I wrote Megan and asked her how she felt about "random firework stands covered in graffiti," I'm sure she thought I was a crazy person, but I'm really glad she went along with my strange location idea. I love the way the photos turned out-the light was just right, her kids were adorable, and we didn't get arrested for trespassing. All key elements of a successful photo shoot.

When we were 2, Cosme (the dad) and I went to nursery class at church together. Then my family moved across town but, after a couple more moves, we ended up in the same middle school. Then high school. Then somehow we found ourselves meeting with the same congregation in college. What were the odds?

At some point (for some unknown reason), we decided to tell everyone that we were cousins. Don't we look like we could be related??? Our fib started in high school, but the story really became convincing during freshman year at BYU. I admitted to my best friend Melissa during finals week that Cosme and I were not, in fact, relatives and she just about had a heart attack. Zak says I'm a terrible liar, but does this incident not prove otherwise?!?

Once again, we found our paths cross when we moved to Houston. His family is currently in Texas while Cosme interns and they live not ten minutes away. It was fun to hang out with them, including his very talented wife Lindsay (who is an amazing photographer. It's a little nerve racking to take photos for a photographer. See her work here.).

I was a little worried that the carnival workers would be tired of the "lady with the camera" but they didn't seem to mind we were there and even gave the kids a free ride on the carousel when we were done!!

C Family Carnival Session | Houston and Cypress Photographer

After seeing a carnival in a parking lot near our house, I called my brother and sister-in-law and asked if they would be willing to model for an impromptu photo session. A session at a carnival has been on my wish list for a long time and though it didn't look like the ideal type of setting (an abandoned grocery store parking lot), I figured it would be a fun experiment. Luckily, they agreed.

Jon and Crystal were total troopers. It was over 100 degrees outside. But between Crystal's rockin' hot pink shoes and the awesome background, dealing with the heat was worth it for the shots we got.

Rumor has it that there's a dinky carnival set up in that parking lot at least once a month. I'd love to shoot more carnival sessions, so if you are in the Houston, Cypress, or Katy areas and want a color blast in your photos, let me know and we'll set something up!!

Location Scouting | Houston and Cypress Family Photographer

I took the kids out to Cypress Top Historic Park today and spent some time walking around. It's perfect for family sessions and though the kids were incredibly uncooperative (and hot!!), I still managed to get a couple of cute shots.

Day Twelve: Slow

Day Nine: Near

My photo: Jakson decided awhile ago that he wants to play golf. Interesting since he's never set foot on a course before and tends to prefer more death defying activities, but whatever. As part of his birthday present last week, we promised to take him golfing. This photo is from our little outing to the putting green.

Q&A
Q: I had a question about focusing in bright light. I was working on the "light" photo and when I tried taking pictures into the light, my camera really wigged out. The auto-focus just kept zooming in and out. I know I could use manual focus but I was trying to take pictures of my two-year-old, and manual focus just isn't fast enough. I was wondering if that was normal - I vaguely remember reading something about cameras having trouble focusing in full sunlight, but couldn't remember where I had seen it.
A: You are right, cameras have a lot of trouble focusing when you are shooting into the sun. A couple suggestions are to focus (push the shutter release button half way down) while your hand is covering the sun (or most of the direct sunlight) and then move your hand before snapping the photo or you can purchase a lens hood. This attaches to the front of your lens and basically does exactly what your hand was doing, covering the direct sun. You can also move yourself around until the angle of the sun coming in isn't too much for your lens and it is able to focus. Hope that helps!

Q: What can you tell me about flash. When do you use a flash? Is it really needed?
A: Frankly, I almost never use a flash. There are a few times that I'll resort to it (when I'm lazy, in terrible lighting and just want a shot for memory's sake. i.e. my son's birthday party inside a warehouse), but mainly I just bump up my ISO. I know some photographers use an off camera flash, but I've never tried one.

Day Eight: Light

She takes him to show and tell at preschool every single week and he rides in her backpack the days in between. I hope that eventually she comes up with some real friends, preferably that take more baths than Monkey, but for now, he'll do.

Day Seven: Shadows

Shadows: There's something so tender and unexpected about a shadow photo. I loved capturing this moment between my husband and daughter (well, and her Monkey). I had posed them differently (just standing straight, holding hands), but he bent down to talk to her and I snapped this. In post processing I converted my photo to black and white because I thought it made the shadows stand out more.

Day Six: Loud

LOUD: Every year on Jakson's birthday I have a photo of him crying through the birthday song. It's tradition. You see, unless he is making the loud (which happens a.lot.), he doesn't like it. His sensitivity to noise is pretty common among those with autism. It's sensory overload and extremely overwhelming. BUT this year, not only did he not cry, cover up his ears, or run away during the song-he sang along! In fact, he started the song! Probably doesn't seem like a big deal to most people, but it is a major breakthrough around our house. Year five is looking better all the time.

Day Five: Quiet

I chose to take a photo of my kids QUIETLY reading. We are a "book family" as my son puts it. And it's true-all of us love to read. Watching my children read really makes me happy. It's one of the few things I feel like I've done right with them-teaching them a love of books.

I do want you all to be aware that because this class has grown so big, I've decided to cut off new registration this Sunday, April 17th. If you have any friends who haven't signed up yet, please encourage them to do so before then.
I will be selling a PDF book of this class after it is over in May. It will include all of the lessons in the emails as well as the daily assignments, camera/photo Q&As from various students, AND will also include the articles that are on this blog about ISO, shutter speed, and aperture so you can print them off and stick them in your camera bag for easy reference . It will only be $9.50-what a steal! . Those who don't register before Sunday will have the opportunity to purchase the PDF book in May. Q&A:
Q: My camera f-stop will not go lower than 3.5, nor with the ISO go lower than 200. Any ideas why and if there is any way around this? I have different lenses for the camera that I have yet to play around with, would they make a difference?
A: The aperture (f-stop) is all about your lens. Most kit lenses won't go below a f/4.8 or so, but my 35mm will go down to 1.8. It all depends on the lens (and the lower number the f-stop goes, usually the more expensive the lens). You should see the most open aperture (lowest number) listed on the outside of your lens. On the other hand, the ISO can't be changed with the lens. Each camera has different capabilities. If you are looking into buying a camera and want this info before purchasing or want to learn more about the camera you already own, KenRockwell.com has a lot of great information. Just add your camera model to the search box.

Q&A:
Q: Why are my pictures so small when I post them on my blog and everyone else's seem normal/large in size? Is it a setting on my camera or a setting on my computer?
A: Not a setting on your camera-the sizing will all be done on your computer. There are a few different ways to change the size of your photos when uploading to your blog.

I am most familiar with Blogger, so this will apply mainly to those using Blogger. When the box to upload photos pops up, BEFORE you start the upload go over to Image Size and click on the option Large. Then go ahead and finish the upload.
If you don't mind messing with the HTML, you can upload your photo regularly and then find the portion of the coding that looks something like this: width: 268px; height: 400px; Delete it. Make sure you leave the quotation marks. Then find the part towards the end that says: s400. Change that to s800. Done! Be aware that this will make your photos quite large.
You can also upload your photos to Flickr first, then click on the share link and copy the html to add to your post.

IN: Jak's birthday party was today (though his actual birthday is not until next week). Thanks to the advice and creativity of my Facebook friends, I was able to make the requested Hot Wheels cake without disastrous results (I am SO not a cake decorator-good thing the icing was mostly covered by candy and "road"). Before the party kids came in to demolish the thing, I spent some time taking photos of my "masterpiece." For posterity's sake of course. The photo was taken Inside and according to my son, Hot Wheels are really "in" right now.

Day Two: New

Disclaimer: Frankly, there will be a lot of photos of my kids throughout the duration of this class. Because that's why I learned about taking pictures in the first place-to capture moments of the little people. I apologize in advance if you get sick of them.

NEW: For those of you who do not know, my son Jak, has autism. As a result, he has been quite speech delayed all of his life. When he turned three he was only saying about 5 words and one of them was "uh huh." I remember reading friends' blogs and they would talk about the funny, cute things their kids said. I wondered if I would ever be able to see Jakson's sense of humor that way. After almost a year of therapy, two years with an awesome preschool teacher, and some hard work on our part, he is now stringing together more than 2 words at a time!! And I can finally quote him saying silly things. Just this morning as I was nagging him to hurry and buckle his seatbelt he said, "You're killing me, smalls." Totally dead pan. It was hilarious. So this photo is meant to capture that new found sense of humor. One that he probably always had, but we are just finding out about.

Thanks to everyone who linked up photos for Day One! Everyone is doing such a fabulous job! I've loved seeing all of your posts and reading many of the stories behind the pictures. I tried to comment on everyone's photos yesterday, but I have to admit, that won't always happen. I'll try, but please don't be upset if I don't get to you on a particular day. Don't hesitate to email me if you have a specific question about a photo or something camera related.
Because I don't really want to work on this over the weekend, I'll be sending the Day Three assignment and lesson TONIGHT!! Day Four won't be sent until Monday, so that still gives you plenty of time to read it over and take your photos.

Q&A:
Q: How do I figure out the settings I used for this photo? Do I have to write them down as I go?
A: Definitely not!! Getting your settings after you upload your photos is very easy. Every program that you use to upload your photos has a menu option for photo settings. I don't know exactly where it is in every single program (because I haven't used them all), but I can tell you that in iPhoto, you go to "Photos" and "Info" then click on the tab that says "Exposure". That will give you the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture/f-stop. In Picasa there's a link to the "full details page" where you can find the info, and if you can't find the settings in the program you are using, you can always upload them to Flickr, click on the "actions" menu and "view exif info." Hope that helps!! Keeping track of your settings in your favorite photos, will help you learn how to use manual mode even quicker! It's all about trial and error.

Day One-Old

OLD: This photo is of my daughter (I bribed her with leftover Valetine candy to sit in the grass while I took this). The "old" theme comes into play with the dress she is wearing. I made it this weekend out of an old onesie and three old t-shirts that my husband never wears. So, old becomes new.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you might have as we go along. Don't be surprised if you email me with questions and then find the Q&A here. I figure that if one person asks, more are wondering. Here are a couple of questions that I received yesterday:

Q: I have a point and shoot. Is that okay, will I be totally out of place?
A: You totally are NOT going to be out of place. I think many of the ladies following along don't have DSLRs. A lot of the hints and tips will apply to learning to use the manual mode of a DSLR camera because this class is meant to help people get more comfortable using their cameras, but I've designed some of the lessons to apply to everyone regardless of their camera (like Day Two). Many point and shoot cameras do come with a manual option now, so you may want to check and see if yours does. No matter your camera, you can still take the photos!! Don't worry, some of the tips will apply to you with a point and shoot, just not this first one unfortunately.

Q: I really want a good camera but it's going to take some saving. If you don't mind me asking, how much is a good camera and what's a good kind to get?
A: I actually bought my camera used. I bought it from a local photographer so knew that she had taken good care of it. Another friend of mine (a photographer) also just bought a used camera because she wanted a better camera but didn't want to pay the $1500 price tag. She bought on Ebay from a photographer which is also a great idea because you have the protection of Ebay and Paypal when you purchase in case there are any issues. She ended up paying 1/2 the price for a camera in mint condition. Just make sure you ask how many shutter actuations the camera has--do a little research about how many the camera can handle, etc. before purchasing. I have a Nikon d40x which is kind of the "beginner" of the DSLRs. I also invested in a really nice lens which makes all the difference. Many photographers also love Canon, but I've never used one. I think it is whatever you start and get used to-the cameras are pretty comparable.

Opposites: A Photo "Class"REGISTRATION CLOSED

One of my goals this year was to take daily photos. Then life happened. BUT I think it's important to continue doing because A) I want memories of my kids in photo form and B) practicing is the only way to become a better photographer!

With that in mind, I introduce my motivation for the next 30 days--- Opposites: a (free) photo class.
The word "class" here is used rather lightly. There won't be a lot of instruction (though I will be giving some hints and tips), but there will be assignments and frankly, I couldn't come up with a better term.

This is how the "class" will work:

Sign up below (at the bottom of this post) with your email address (you'll also need to click on the link that is sent to your email confirming your registration).
Starting April 6th, you'll be receiving assignments (or themes) every other day by email. These themes are totally open to your interpretation. There are no right or wrong answers. Your photos can have people in them, or they might not-totally up to you. The assignments are meant to give you some direction and get your creativity flowing.
The emails will also include some hints and tips. I've already written articles on ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed previously, so I won't be going over those again (unless of course, you have specific questions you want to ask), but hopefully some of the other camera/photo helps I'll share will be beneficial.
I will also add a post on this blog correlating to that day's assignment so you can link your blog posts with pictures. It will only include the theme, my photo for that assignment, and my camera settings, not the other information that you get when you sign up for the class. In other words, if you want all of the info., you'll need to sign up (hey, it's free!).
You'll have two days to take your photo for the assignment, edit, upload it to your blog, and share with the linky at the bottom of the Beth V Photography post that correlates with that day's theme.
Obviously, nothing is going to happen if you don't upload it, but it's sometimes nice to share-this way we can learn from each other. If you are using manual settings, it would be really helpful if you post your camera settings as well.

You don't need to own a fancy camera to participate. A lot of the hints/tips will really only be relevant to those using a DSLR, but many point and shoot cameras have manual camera options. And it's always great to have a reason to take pictures no matter your camera!!
You don't need to be a professional photographer to participate. I still have a hard time with that term. I don't claim to be a professional. You just need to own a camera. Or even a camera phone!
If you get behind in your assignments, I will not kick you out. Or give you a failing grade. You can even sit in the back row and throw paper airplanes for all I care.

I don't really understand why this is, mainly because your photography should bring you business, not your ultra secret locations, but maybe I just missed that particular memo.
